The barometer for sci-fi feel-good films has been globally raised with the release of the latest Bollywood blockbuster Koi Mil Gaya, which is an original, entertaining and path-breaking film not only for Indian cinema, but for the world.
Rohit Mehra (Hrithik Roshan) plays a mentally challenged individual with a child’s mind trapped in a man’s body. The son of a scientist whose last moments of life were his greatest achievement in contacting extra terrestrials, Rohit has built his life around his friends and mother, until he meets Nisha (Preity Zinta) who he fast develops a deep friendship with. Through digging up his father’s work, Rohit accidentally sends a signal into space and the response is a spaceship, an alien left behind on earth and a heart-warming story of friendship, the human spirit and belonging.
With ace direction by Rakesh Roshan who has speedily earned the reputation of a Pandora’s box director from whom the audience can no longer know what to expect, and a sensitive and powerful performance by Hrithik Roshan that takes the audience into the heart of Rohit, the film scores well on all levels. Special effects and ethereal music add to the magic which is at the core of it, a film that is enhanced by these additions but succeeds because of script, direction and performances.
Bearing the tagline ‘You are not alone’, the film has etched its way into cinematic history ensuring it will definitely not be alone in its pioneering journey that reiterates good storytelling, masterful filmmaking and performances that are literally out of this world.
